Dear Dean Hazeltine,

After all these years I think still think about you. My mother frequently reminds me of an open house you had for students and their parents when I was in my sophomore year and taking EN 9. My brother, who took EN 9 when I was a TA and is now a successful businessperson, thinks fondly of his experiences as well.

For me, the memories come in different ways. Sometimes I think about your kindness, a trait that I have learned is quite rare in academia. Sometimes I think about how you trained us in logic and how what I learned helped me in my first career in commercial radio and my second (and much more pleasurable) career as a historian. But above all I think about how you taught us to think and act ethically as professionals.

Thank you for setting high standards and helping to turn me, and so many Brown students, into caring people.

Happy Birthday!
