Dear Barrett,

I first met you 40 years ago in the summer of 1966 when I was touring potential colleges in the northeast. I was very interested in studying engineering, but was attending a small Catholic high school in northern New Jersey that did not have a strong science program.

You were very welcoming and encouraged me to apply to Brown despite the fact that I would have ground to make up when I got to college. I was surprised and elated when I was admitted and committed myself to living up to your encouraging words. I had a wonderful experience at Brown that I still treasure and which has helped me throughout my career.

I haven't paid much attention to activities on campus while living out here on the West Coast, but, looking at the other emails, I am sure you are still providing the inspiration for current generations of students.

Thank you for your words of encouragement all those years ago and have a great birthday!
